What is S/MIME?
S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) is a standard for encrypting and signing emails, which guarantees the confidentiality and authenticity of messages.
Find out more about the use cases of S/MIME.
How S/MIME works
S/MIME uses a public key infrastructure (PKI), which consists of a public and a private key.
The public key is used to encrypt messages, the private key to decrypt them.
Digital certificates issued by trusted certification authorities (CAs) such as SIGN8 contain the public key as well as information such as the name, e-mail address and organization of the holder.
These certificates confirm the trustworthiness and identity of the certificate holder.
S/MIME certificates
Our certificates can be saved and used on the client itself, stored securely on a USB certificate store or managed centrally for all employees on our TCI using a mail gateway.
Your advantages
Secure e-mail communication
S/MIME encrypts your emails so that they are protected from unauthorized access.
This is particularly important for confidential or sensitive information.
Authenticity check
With digital email signatures, you can ensure that the sender is actually who they claim to be.
This reduces the risk of phishing and other fraudulent activities.
Data integrity
S/MIME ensures that your messages cannot be changed or manipulated during transmission.
Any changes would be noticed immediately as the signature would become invalid.
Confidentiality
Only the intended recipients who have the corresponding key can read the encrypted messages.
This guarantees that sensitive information does not fall into the wrong hands.
Certified
SIGN8 is a qualified Trust Service Provider. Your advantage – your documents are not sent to other providers, but remain secure with us.
Can be integrated
S/MIME certificates can be seamlessly integrated into popular email clients such as Outlook, Thunderbird and Apple Mail.
Certificate management is straightforward and protection can be implemented with little effort.
Do you have any questions?
How do I obtain an S/MIME certificate?
You can request an S/MIME certificate directly from SIGN8 GmbH.
We offer certificates that can be stored on SmartCards, USB tokens or in an HSM (TCI).
Which e-mail clients support S/MIME?
S/MIME is supported by most popular email clients, including Outlook, Thunderbird and Apple Mail, ensuring easy integration.
Which e-mail clients support S/MIME?
S/MIME encryption offers a high level of security as it is based on proven public key cryptography.
Only the recipient with the corresponding private key can read the encrypted messages.
Can I use S/MIME certificates for multiple e-mail addresses?
Yes, you can request separate S/MIME certificates for each of your email addresses to ensure the security of all your communications.
What happens if I lose my private key?
If you lose your private key, you will no longer be able to decrypt encrypted messages.
It is therefore important to keep this key safe and create regular backups.
